Playing With: "Gumshoe" [Country: USA, Running Time: 4'34", Director: Matt Steinauer]

We’ve all been witness to Hollywood’s attempt at defining romance on the big screen. We’re all so used to the formula by now we could likely write it on a blackboard as an equation, which makes 9 Full Moons an all the more spectacular achievement.

Directed by Tomer Almagor, the film tells the story of Frankie and Lev, two broken souls besieged by their own personal demons who find themselves drawn to one another even as everyone around them tries to pull them apart. Fighting to stay together against all odds, their relationship is a rollercoaster of emotions and heartbreaking struggles that are captured so ably, you’ll feel you’ve lived their relationship right alongside them.

Blistering in its honest portrayal of the ups and downs that come with the indefinable love shared by soul mates and blessed with a script that gives the leads (Amy Seimetz and Bret Roberts) complex and deeply layered characters to lose themselves in, 9 Full Moons is a reality check for the Hollywood romantic mill. This is what real love looks like. It’s not always pretty, it’s not always perfect, but by God is it worth fighting for.
